Enter Helix Water District’s 19th Annual WaterSmart Landscape Contest. We want to recognize Helix customers who have beautiful, colorful and water-efficient landscapes and award a grand prize $250 gift card to the nursery of your choice.
What is a water-efficient landscape? First, it’s not filled with plants that need a lot of water. Those plants belong in coastal Oregon or Washington, where it rains all the time. WaterSmart means plants that are happy with the small amount of rain San Diego gets each year. Plants native to California and the world’s other Mediterranean climate regions love it here. WaterSmart also means that you’ve learned how to water plants without getting the sidewalk or street all wet.
We’re always spreading the word about WaterSmart landscaping because outdoor water use typically accounts for over 50% of a home’s total water use. Compared to a traditional landscape, water-efficient landscapes thrive on one-half or one-fifth of the amount of water. You’ll love the benefits: a smaller water bill, habitat for birds, butterflies, honeybees and you -- make spaces in your landscape for eating outside, sitting around the fire or enjoying nature. Add a few WaterSmart shade trees and you’ll also increase the value of your property!

Entering is easy and you can do it on a smartphone. First, take 5-10 photos of your WaterSmart landscape, tell us why you installed it, the types of plants you have and some of the benefits you see. When you have that ready, go to landscapecontest.com , select Helix Water District and complete the entry form.
We judge entries for overall attractiveness, design, plant selection, efficient irrigation and appropriate maintenance.
