jjThieves making off with backflow prevention devices

Backflow prevention devices are needed at a number of sites throughout the Helix Water District service area. They prevent foreign and unwanted substances from siphoning into the sanitized drinking water system. Backflow devices are required at commercial buildings, on lots that have dedicated irrigation systems, for homes that have auxiliary water supplies, such as wells, and buildings with fire protection systems.

Most often the valves and the pipes that lead to them are made of copper and brass. These metals are in high demand and a flourishing theft ring in East County has been raiding homes and businesses, removing the pipes and valves for resale through recycling centers.

New laws require that recyclers take the name, address, and driver's license number of anyone recycling these metals. That, however, has failed to stem the recent rash of thefts.

If you have a backflow preventer on your property, you may wish to protect it by:

1. Purchasing a locked cage that encases the entire assembly, or
2. Painting the pipes and valve, which decreases the value of the metal to a recycler

If your backflow prevention device gets stolen, report the theft to police. If you need more information, please contact Darrin Teisher at (619) 667-.6224.
